About the Piece
I completed painting "Meet Me at the Equinox" during that magical moment when day meets night, when the world hangs in perfect balance.
The equinox, that rare moment when light and darkness share the day equally, feels like nature's most profound lesson in harmony. It's a cosmic pause, a universal exhale where opposites don't conflict but complement. The piece explores this beautiful tension, rendered in deep indigos and rich earth tones that evoke the mysterious depths of the ocean. The composition builds upward like a crescendo, starting with whispered marks that gradually intensify and rise, much like waves gathering strength before they crest.
Working with these oceanic pigments, I let the materials guide me, pooling, blending, and evolving across the canvas with minimal intervention. I found myself removing more than adding, creating those precious moments of "Ma" (空), the negative spaces that allow the composition to breathe.
The indigo depths and earthy textures create a visual rhythm that mirrors the equinox's perfect equilibrium, a moment when nature reminds us that balance isn't static but a dynamic dance of forces. Just as the equinox marks transition - summer to autumn, winter to spring -this painting celebrates that threshold space where transformation becomes possible.
Like the equinox itself, it whispers rather than shouts, revealing more by showing less -a crescendo that builds not to overwhelm, but to awaken.
"In the balance point between chaos and calm, between the depths and the surface, we find our truest nature—not fixed, but flowing; not separate, but connected to everything that rises and falls with the same cosmic breath."
