Where Sky Meets Water
This original artwork invites you into a meditative moment between worlds—where indigo depths meet earthy browns and contemplative grays.
Inspired by a mesmerising scene of seagulls swooping over a sunset water at Port Fairy, diving between rowing boats and skimming reflective surfaces, "Becoming" explores that profound sense of limitlessness when boundaries dissolve. Just as these birds navigate seamlessly between sky and water, the painting creates a visual poetry of freedom and possibility.
Through my Zen-influenced approach of Yugen (深い) – revealing profound depth through suggestion rather than exposition – I've used fluid, intuitive techniques to allow the paint itself to create natural patterns. Diluted inks and earthy pigments pooled onto canvas, gently maneuvered and coaxed with brushes and air, creating organic textures that mirror both rippling water and expansive skies.
The moody color palette was deliberately chosen to capture that liminal space between day and night, between certainty and possibility. The indigos represent depth and introspection, while earthy browns ground the composition in natural wisdom. The interplay of light and shadow echoes our own journey between what we know and what we might become.
What makes this piece special is the sense of Ma (間) – the peaceful negative space that allows the composition to breathe with naturalness and simplicity. This balance between movement and stillness invites you to experience that same feeling of expansiveness I felt watching those seagulls in flight – the sense that life has no limits when we surrender to its natural flow.
Crafted with premium artist-quality materials on stretched canvas and framed in oak, "Boundless" comes ready to hang with professional hanging hardware included. Each form and textural element creates subtle dimension that shifts beautifully as light changes throughout your day.
My hope is that when you live with this piece, it becomes a daily reminder that we too can move between worlds with grace – that like those seagulls, we are free to navigate life's depths and heights with equal wonder.
